“‘Cause after the storm’s when the flowers bloom…”
This post was inspired by Kali Uchis’ masterpiece of a record, “After the Storm”, that also features Bootsy Collins and Tyler the Creator. I love songs that translate the message of whatever inner struggle that you may be going through is only meant to transform you in the end to something better. Uchis was letting the listener know that nothing comes easy and not to give up.
This is something that has resonated with me lately. My mind is in a constant tug of war, fighting against feelings of doubt, fear, and unhappiness. Joy, freedom, and peace are aiming to be the victors. I am daily becoming more comfortable with the new version of me; a young woman on her journey aware of all that goes on within her while living out her wildest dreams. The risk is what could go wrong no longer outweighs the rewards of what if things go right.
Putting my life under a mental microscope has shifted my thought process on how I view myself. Being self-conscious only becomes harmful when you are in a state of mind that judges and belittles self. Having the ability to be aware of the areas in your life where you have the opportunity to grow can only make you stronger by acknowledging and actively working on them. It is just as important to know your weaknesses as you know your strengths. This way your problem areas can become your progress areas.
All of this whirls through my brain concocting this storm. But as the song says,
“If you need a hero, just look in the mirror. No one’s gonna save you now so you better save yourself.“

I have been saving myself for a while now, and I am proud of how far I have come. Even creating this blog is a big step for me, as I have written inspirational journal entries for years in my private notebook. I know that nothing good, like success or peace of mind would come easy but after the storm, my flowers will bloom.
